High School

High School

Our Secondary II (High School) program consists of students aged 15-18, in tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades.

We offer the State core high school requirements in addition to two more semesters of social science, four semesters of foreign language, Practical Life as well as additional math, science and English requirements. Our students will have a total of four full years of core course work.

WMPCS allows for dual credit classes during a student's junior and senior years. Because of the wide array of schools that participate in these types of programs, WMPCS only accepts dual credit classes that are completed through Beaufort County Community College, Pitt County Community College and NC Virtual Public Schools.

We offer many choice electives including:

  • Practical Life
  • Introduction to Microsoft
  • Spanish I & II
  • Astronomy
  • Drama
  • Shop/Maker
  • Photography
  • Design & Communication
  • Health & PE

As a public high school, we are accredited by the State Board of Education.

WMPCS High School Myth v. Fact:

Myth: Montessori is only for younger children.

Fact: Towards the end of her career and life, Maria Montessori spent almost all of her time dedicated to developing and coordinating her work for older students. Her stages of development went as far as university. Nationally and internationally, there has been an insurgence of data and research that supports Dr. Montessori's adolescent research. In the US some of the most successful high schools are Montessori based.

Myth: WMPCS only offers the minimum course requirements.

Fact: We offer the State core high school requirements in addition to two more semesters of social science, four semesters of foreign language, Personal Finance or Business Finance as well as additional math, science and English requirements. Our students will have a total of four full years of core course work. In addition, each student is required to complete at least 200 volunteer hours prior to graduation.

Myth: WMPCS does not offer Early College or dual credit classes.

Fact: WMPCS allows for dual credit classes during a student's Jr. and Sr. years. Because of the wide array of schools that participate in these types of programs, WMPCS only accepts dual credit classes that are completed through Beaufort County Community College and NC Virtual Public Schools.

Myth:Classes taken at other schools will transfer in automatically.

Fact: Courses taken at other high schools may transfer, but will be reviewed by the Coordinator and Directors prior to being credited towards WMPCS graduation requirements. In some cases, partial transfer of coursework may occur. If a course is granted partial credit, it may not fulfill the graduation requirement for the school.

Myth: WMPCS does not offer electives.

Fact: Although we will not be offering the range of electives that traditional public schools do,

Myth: WMPCS does not have organized sports.

Fact: We offer small team sports but do not be offer a full track or football team. Some of the Junior Varsity and Varsity sports options we offer are soccer, volleyball, basketball, cheer, and cross country. WMPCS plans to have Intramural Indoor Soccer.

Myth: Montessori high school students don't do well because they do not grade or take standardized tests.

Fact: As we prepare our students for college, we formally test and grade during middle school. This is consistent with almost every other Montessori school in the country. The high school will also participate in the state end of course tests as required by state law.

Myth: A WMPCS diploma is not the same as a public school diploma.

Fact: Our diploma carries the same weight as a traditional public school diploma.

Myth: WMPCS is not accredited.

Fact: As a public high school, we are accredited by the State Board of Education. Additionally, we have started the process to be accredited by the Southern States Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) as well as The American Montessori Society (AMS).
