WMPCS Fall Community Meeting Update

Last night we had the community meeting that was scheduled for earlier in the year.   The meeting was attended by 9 parents, two staff members, and a Board member. The discussion revolved around five points: 1) the structure of the PTO, 2) an update on the Sec I building, 3) drop off and pick up, 4) art instruction, and 5) parent ed opportunities.

The majority of the meeting was spent discussing the current and prospective future structures of the PTO.   The group present suggested that the discussion be continued and tabled to the January Community Meeting in order to have additional feedback from our stakeholders (parents, staff members, and board members).    

One of the points highlighted was the uncertainty of the purpose of the PTO. Additional topics were: lack of communication from the school, the uncertainty of the reporting structure of the PTO, the importance of the PTO because it does have a non-voting seat at the Board, and last but not least any change in the structure of the PTO would require a change in the school’s bylaws.

We encourage you to join the discussion in January as we all work to ensure that the PTO is sustainable and supports our school.   The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 10th at 6:30 in the Secondary II community room.

The second topic that we discussed was the Secondary I building plans.   We are excited to have submitted financing documents and look forward to progressing with the building as soon as a suitable financing package is obtained.

Drop off and pick-up continues to be a focal point.  Please be sure not to park in the drop-off/pick-up lines as it does delay the whole process.   While we staff these times please let us know if you are noticing something that we might not see.   We address every concern that is brought to the office and your student’s safety while they are on our campus continues to be one of our primary driving forces.

We also spoke about art instruction in the classrooms and ways that WMPCS can supplement those activities.  Today, we started speaking with an individual who will hopefully be able to provide art instruction that is more formal after school starting in January.   This will be an opt-in program and as soon as we receive additional information (dates, times, fees) we will forward that to you.

Darla and I would also like to make sure that all parents are aware of the different venues to receive information or speak with us regarding suggestions or concerns at the school.   Each Monday your student will have a letter from their classroom. If you have a concern regarding your child’s instruction or matters that happen in the classroom, please be sure to speak with your child’s guides first.   

Additionally, we send out a monthly letter and calendar of upcoming events from the office.   We understand that it is hard to know all of the different events around campus; thus we update our school calendar as soon as events are scheduled.  It is a google calendar and can be downloaded to your mobile devices. While we work to send out text messages before meetings, we will increase the duration prior to the meetings in an effort to ensure you have enough time to plan around the events.

This year we are also having monthly parent education meetings that are hosted by each of the classrooms.   While there is not one in December, they are scheduled for the remaining months of the year. If you would like information about the parent education meetings, please look to your classroom letters and/or check the calendar.

Last but not least we understand that everyone is extremely busy.  Each Wednesday Darla and I have open office hours form 8:15-9:15 and the meeting is an open format without an agenda.   If you have something that you would like to speak with us about, please feel free to stop by.
