Letter to Parents

--sent out with copy of School Report Card

Dear Parents and Interested Citizens:

Washington Montessori is focused on every student achieving to his/her greatest potential. You truly are our partners in ensuring academic success and the development of the whole child. We are pleased to provide you with this report card outlining the objectively measured information our state uses to compare one school to another.  Washington Montessori has committed, caring teachers and staff members whose primary goals are supporting learning and nurturing the children entrusted to our care. We are reaching out to the community and have business and civic partners working with us in this endeavor. Our test scores show that our students have a firm foundation to their education and a thorough knowledge of the curriculum.

Our students participate annually in our international Kidsfest which enhances the global awareness and understanding of our students and our community at large. We, as a school and our students individually, regularly seek out opportunities for community service. We value the teaching of peaceful conflict resolution. Peace Education and Grace and Courtesy are as important as Reading and Math in our curriculum. We believe we are cultivating the future leaders of the world and these leaders need an environment rich with warmth, kindness and respect in which to grow. We hold monthly community meetings for our parents to participate in the decision making at our school and offer Parent Education opportunities throughout the year. All of our Upper Elementary and Middle Grades classes have a daily community meeting to address issues in the class and seek resolutions. We offer a Before and After School program to support our families.  We have added a private preschool program to enhance our Early Childhood classes and begin laying the foundation in Montessori as early as possible.

Our innovative Middle Grades program is characterized by Immersion Weeks throughout the year, including a ropes course, sailing camp, and primitive camping.  They fund these experiences through an Economic Experience in which they develop their own business plan, implement the plan, analyze their profit and losses, and evaluate the plan.  This program utilizes all the skills and lessons learned during their previous Montessori experience to shape them into peaceful, insightful, introspective and creative young adults.

Two years we completed the first phase of our new campus.  Over the summer, we relocated our 3-6 and 6-9 year olds from our original campus to our permanent location east of Washington.  Our beautiful 29 acre campus is comprised of over 14 acres of wetlands.  Our Faculty, Board of Trustees and Parents are working together to construct an outdoor science education lab as well as trails and boardwalks that will enable our students, and students from the surrounding areas, to study the ecosystems at our fingertips.  We are confronting the challenge of funding this endeavor through grants and private fundraising. We will not allow finances to withhold meaningful educational opportunities from our students.

I am one of your best resources for additional information about our school. I welcome this partnership with you and hope that this report card will lead you to even greater involvement with our school.

Sincerely,

Stacey M. Shepherd
Head of School
