Governor Morehead School has been selected as the
WMPCS 2019-2020 Holiday Giving Project
Each year the Washington Montessori Community comes together to raise funds for organizations and people in need for our Holiday Giving Project. In years past we have raised funds for poverty in Africa, camps for students with disabilities in Eastern NC, natural disaster victims, Heifer International, as well as local and military families.
Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students in a unique residential setting. When the school was established in 1845, it was the eighth school for the blind in the United States.
The school provided services to children from 5 to 21 years of age until 1987, at which time the Governor Morehead Preschool program extended the services to children, ages birth through 4 years of age, throughout the state.
Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students, GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program.
Funds raised this year will support Governor Morehead’s student outings and student services. The funds will allow the school to purchase much-needed items for the students as well as supplement field trip expenses.
Please help us support this wonderful institution and speak with your child about their classroom goals, how they can work to raise funds, and the value of giving to others. Funds raised from students should be donated through the classroom. Other donations can be directed to the office. The last day for receipt of donations is Dec 13th.
Thank you for your support of this great organization.
